DID YOU KNOW? - Veteran's Day began as Armistice Day.

Armistice Day
celebrated the symbolic end of WWI (November 11, 1918). The "treaty" was signed in France at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

The official US holiday began in 1938.

It became Veteran's Day, one celebarating the contributions of all war veterans, in 1954.

From our Director...

Dear Satellite Community,

To make the best of this marking period, there are a few things that I want to remind you of:

1. School begins every day at 8:30 a.m. EVERY STUDENT is expected to be at school on time. This includes new students who were accepted in June.

2. We need your participation in your child's education! That means: making sure advisors have a correct phone number to reach you all through the year (if your number changes, please contact the advisor, do not count on your child to pass on the new number); if your child's advisor leaves you a message, please call back as soon as possible; keeping appointments with advisors, the college counselor or other school staff; attending parent meetings, community events; and contact your child's advisor if you have questions or concerns about him/her at school.  Only together can we be sure that your child is getting everything he/she needs from his/her education at Satellite.

3. Support us in our TOTAL STUDENT ELECTRONICS BAN AT SATELLITE.  You can do this by: talking about it at home with your child if he/she doesn't understand why we have the ban; not communicating with them during class time (12:00 -1:00 is lunch time and they can use their electronics outside or in the cafeteria at that time); working with us if we have to call you concerning your child's use of electronics at school.  If you have an emergency, call the school office at 212-677-8900 (or 212-677-8901) and we will find your child immediately (remember we did that for 20 years successfully before cell phones existed!).  Thank you for your help.

We are looking forward to a productive and second term with your children.  Thank you for sharing them with us.

Peace.

Sarah Blos
Director

Way to go Satellite!

It was good news for Satellite Academy in April. During our annual School Quality Review, Satellite (all four campuses) got the highest available ranking of "well developed."

Outside evaluators come for three days and look at all aspects of our program. It's nice to be recognized for all our hard work by an educational group hired by the Department of Education to review all New York City's public schools.

Are you being a helpful parent?

Satellite Academy believes education can not work without parental/guardian involvement. There are ways that you can become involved and help your child to succeed at school. Click here for our list of Ten Things You Can Do.
